Pollution in the Region:
There are not too many major environmental challenges in or around the Nagoya region except for pollution. Although the medical facilities are excellent, pollution in the city remains to be the city’s worst health problem. Due to the rapid growth of the economy and industry in the Nagoya Area, the amount of waste has greatly increased. Since the 1999 “Emergency Announcement for Garbage Reduction”, residents, business and the government have come together to find ways to help create a more recycling-oriented society. Due to the collaboration between the government and people, the amount of garbage decreased approximately by 30% while the amount of recyclable materials collected increased roughly 2.6 times between 1998 and 2006. The city of Nagoya has set a unique target to decrease CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions by 10%.
The pollution causes major climate change problems including high temperatures and constant natural disasters. The natural disasters, such as tsunamis, typhoons, and wildfires become more frequent with the rise in pollution to the air. The air pollution index indicates that the current air quality of Nagoya is rated at a 97. Based on the rating, the air quality is in the “moderate” category, emphasizing that the air pollution is pretty bad. A couple of cities surrounding Nagoya have a rating of 104, which is in the “unhealthy” category. All of these cities currently have a temperature of 21˚C but constantly changes because of the pollution. The city of Nagoya is taking counter measures to create less pollution by putting more solar panels on their bullet trains, to reduce the use of fossil fuels, putting less harm on the city.

Environmental Awards Received:
Nagoya has received much gratitude for its efforts regarding garbage reduction through the cooperation with residents and businesses. As a joint recipient, Nagoya and its residents were proud to receive both the “Grand Prix” and the “Environmental Minister’s Award” at the 2003 Municipal Government Environmental Grand Prix.
